EDGE ESSENTIALS
Training people to have consistent, resilient and reliable outdoor skills is what I do. Sharp tools are at the centre of bushcraft, from carving and fire preparation to campcraft and game preparation. Let me help you ensure your sharpening skills are solid, practical, and reliable, so your bushcraft tools are always ready for use.

“These videos are really useful. I can see myself coming back to these sharpening videos a lot.”
- Neil Madden
“Excellent videos that pull everything together. I learned to sharpen young as a gamekeeper and still picked up new tips here.”
- Robin Killingsworth
The use of cutting tools is one of the major aspects of bushcraft that sets it apart from other outdoor disciplines. Being able to keep your tools sharp is fundamental to effective bushcraft.
Without a keen edge, carving becomes clumsy, making feathersticks is frustrating, splitting wood is inefficient, and even simple food preparation takes more time than it should.
Over the years, I've travelled and worked in many environments where I've had to rely daily on sharp knives and axes, for fire preparation, carving, campcraft, game preparation and more. Keeping those tools sharp, sometimes far from home, has always been essential.
My approach with students is to strip away the noise and focus on what's clear, practical, and essential.
So what do you actually need to be able to do?
Much of what you see online is based around novelty, desgined to catch attention. Plus there are endless debates about steels, sharpening gadgets, honing, stropping, and exotic polishing techniques. Out in the woods, though, what you actually need are tried-and-tested methods that you can rely on every time.
Even when you are at home, preparing your tools for a trip or a camp-out, you don't need a drawer full of sharpening systems. You don't need to memorise dozens of steps in esoteric techniques.
What you need is a compact, reliable set of methods that easily keep your tools sharp and safe, at home or in the field.
You also need to know how to apply those methods consistently, whether you're using a bench stone at home, a pocket stone in camp, or a simple strop to finish the edge.
Learning this requires a structured approach based on an understanding of the fundamentals, not scattered tips and tricks.
That's why I've built this course.
Yes, you could join one of my larger online bushcraft programmes, but they cover a much wider range of bushcraft skills.
Here in Edge Essentials, sharpening alone is the focus — a complete, easy-to-learn, pragmatic system for keeping your bushcraft tools sharp.
"The close-ups really helped me understand what’s going on at the blade edge — a picture really does paint a thousand words."
- Jerry Ollis
"Really enjoying the detail in these comprehensive videos. The instruction is clear and practical, answering questions I hadn’t found covered anywhere else."
- Nick Skinner
Edge Essentials contains the complete set of sharpening methods you need as your core competency in this area of bushcraft skills — from establishing a solid foundation at the bench stone, through to practical field techniques, reliable axe sharpening, and the finishing touches that keep every edge at its best.
There are four modules, each with two comprehensive lessons....
1. FOUNDATIONAL SHARPENING
Start with solid technique. Learn how to sharpen a bushcraft knife properly — and avoid the common mistakes that waste time or damage your blade.
2. FIELD SHARPENING
When you are in the backwoods, your knife still needs care. This module shows you effective, packable ways to keep your knife sharp in the field — including using a pocket stone and a puck.
3. AXE SHARPENING
Axes need a different approach to knives. These lessons walk you through how to sharpen and maintain an axe edge correctly, preserving its cutting power and safety — even with minimal kit.
4. FINISHING TOUCHES
Learn how bring your blades to a razor's edge and mirror finish. Keep curved tools like spoon knives in keen working condition. All with simple, homemade solutions.
“I’d watched a few videos from the manufacturer, but I got a clearer explanation from you about using a flat stone than from those other resources. Put that with the knife/puck video and it’s a really comprehensive introduction to a wider world beyond the elementals.”
- Russell Brown
"This puts all the key factors into context in an enlightening and useful way. The photos and micro-slides illustrating each stage are excellent. Many thanks."
- Stuart Stevens
“It’s so useful to understand how to use different tools to achieve the same result. Also a good reminder at the end about the dangers of axe use.”
- Alex Rayner
“Most helpful and needed. I’ve sharpened my axe a few times but flattened it a bit with bigger stones. This really helped me see how to get the convex back.”
- Barry Baker
Paul Kirtley is one of the leading wilderness skills educators working today. He has been teaching bushcraft and outdoor skills since 2003, combining deep field experience with a clear, structured approach to instruction.
Paul has worked alongside respected figures such as Ray Mears, Lars Fält, Juha Rankinen, and David Scott-Donelan, and his influence continues to shape how bushcraft is taught today.
He is the author of Wilderness Axe Skills and Campcraft, a comprehensive guide to practical axe use and associated techniques, which has become a trusted resource for serious outdoorspeople.
Edge Essentials reflects Paul's no-nonsense, real-world approach to tool maintenance, born of decades using and sharpening knives and axes in remote and demanding environments.
For decades, I've taught sharpening as part of my broader bushcraft training, both in the field and online.
The lessons I've collected together in Edge Essentials were originally embedded in larger programmes designed to build well-rounded bushcraft skills.
But I started to notice a pattern. Many people were confused by the sheer volume of sharpening advice and gear talk online.
Others were focusing on the wrong things, such as chasing mirror polishes for the sake of it, or arguing over carbides, oxides, honing fluids, stropping pastes, steel types and more, all the while still struggling to get a decent edge on a knife or axe, especially when out in the field.
I decided to bring together a core set of my sharpening lessons in one place, organised into a clear and reliable system.
The material in Edge Essentials comes from two of my flagship courses: the Online Elementary Wilderness Bushcraft Course and the Continuation Study Series.
Until now, these lessons were only available within those larger programmes.
For the first time ever, Edge Essentials makes these key lessons available separately, in a focused, accessible and highly valuable package.
Edge Essentials provides a comprehensive sharpening system designed to give you confidence in the field and consistency at home, without complexity or unnecessary equipment.
Edge Essentials is a focused course on sharpening the most common tools of bushcraft: knives, axes, and spoon knives. It provides you with reliable, real-world methods for maintaining effective edges both in the field and at home, utilising minimal gear and a clear, practical approach.
"Love the extra details Paul. ...very enlightening and gave me a much greater depth of understanding by being able see what’s going on."
GORDON DEDMAN | FOUNDER & SENIOR INSTRUCTOR, BUSHCRAFT SURVIVAL AUSTRALIA
Whether you're just getting started or have years of experience in the woods, keeping your tools sharp is non-negotiable. This focused course gives you a solid, practical approach to sharpening that works - without unnecessary complexity. Make sure your edge maintenance is reliable, repeatable, and rooted in what actually matters.
In this training I teach the core methods of sharpening bushcraft tools. I explain the key details that make a significant difference to the end result, common mistakes to avoid, and how to keep your tools ready for use in both field and home settings. More details below…
"If you take the principles and methods in this training and put them into practice, you’ll have the confidence of knowing you can keep your knives, axes, and carving tools sharp, safe, and ready to use whenever you need them."
PAUL KIRTLEY | WILDERNESS SKILLS INSTRUCTOR
The course contains four hours of video training, delivered in eight focused lessons. Each section is practical, easy to follow, and available for you to revisit whenever you need.
Once you purchase the course, you have ongoing access. There’s no expiry date. You can log in and revisit the material as often as you like, for as long as you like.
You don’t need and elaborate or expensive sharpening kit. The course demonstrates sharpening with basic bench stones, pocket stones, axe stones, and simple stropping setups. I also show field-expedient methods that use minimal gear. Start with what you have and add only what makes sense for you.
No. The course is designed for all levels. If you’re brand new, you’ll learn a clear, step-by-step approach. If you’ve been sharpening for years, you’ll still pick up key details, avoid common mistakes, and gain a reliable system that works in both home and field settings.
Both. The course includes full lessons on sharpening knives, axes, and even curved blades like spoon knives. You’ll learn how to maintain all your essential bushcraft tools.
The sharpening lessons here are curated from those larger programmes. If you already have access to both of these flagship courses, you already have the material. Edge Essentials is designed for people who want the sharpening system in one focused, standalone package.
Yes. The course is hosted on our online learning platform at onlinebushcraftcourses.com, which works on desktop, mobile, and tablet. You can watch lessons at home, in camp, or wherever you have a signal.
Yes. Like all of my online courses, Edge Essentials is covered by my standard 30-day guarantee. If, after watching the lessons and trying the techniques in the course, you genuinely feel you didn’t get value, just let us know within 30 days and we’ll refund you.
You’ll have access to our learning community, where you can ask questions, share progress, and get feedback. I regularly check in, and you’ll be learning alongside others who are sharpening and using their tools too.
The video training is four hours (across eight lessons) but the real value comes from practice. You can dip in and revisit specific lessons whenever you want. Even short practice sessions at home will build your confidence quickly.
Each lesson is accompanied by explanatory text. Where appropriate, lessons also have PDF checklists you can download to your device or print out. You can then have these with you at your bench or in the woods, so you can work through the step-by-step processes in the lessons.
Free content online can be useful, but by the nature of how YouTube serves videos to you, it’s fragmented. Videos from different people in different contexts can be contradictory. Edge Essentials gives you a complete, coherent, structured sharpening system from start to finish, tested in the field over decades. It saves you time, confusion, and wasted effort.
"I have never spent that long sharpening my knives and used to go straight to the fine stones. Your explanation of why you have to do the hard work first makes so much sense now. I can’t wait to get all of my knives up to scratch."
- Melanie McTeer
"I’ve attended two survival instructor programs in the US, including a 45-day immersion, and I’m still gaining so much from this course. You are an amazing instructor and I’m thankful you are offering your knowledge in this way."
- Christopher Phillips
Purchasing Edge Essentials also gives you lifetime membership of our private learning community The Campfire Learning Circle.
