#AskPaulKirtley 90 – Canoe Trips, Natural Navigation, Weather Skills, Beautiful Moments in Nature, Feather Sticks
In this episode of #AskPaulKirtley I answer a varied set of listener questions. I start with where I would personally go for a leisure canoe trip, rather than a work one, and share some of my favourite rivers and lochs in Scotland, such as the Spey, the Tay and Loch Maree, along with some thoughts on the potential hazards to be aware of on both moving and flat water. From there, I move on to a question about navigation, comparing using a compass with orienting by the sun, stars, landmarks, and also how I build a mental map of the terrain.
I also dig into weather awareness, looking at how to improve forecasting skills without relying on technology, by understanding prevailing winds, seasonal patterns, and the clouds associated with weather fronts. Another question prompted me to reflect on my most beautiful moments in nature, from alpine sunsets in the Pyrenees to quiet evenings on Canadian lakes and close encounters with wildlife in Africa. Finally, I round things off with a practical bushcraft point about feather stick technique, explaining the best ways to coordinate knife and wood movements for effective shavings.
As always, thanks for the great questions and your continued support of this series.
