In this episode of #AskPaulKirtley I share the five knots I think every bushcrafter should know, then answer what makes a good travelling companion on wilderness journeys. I also cover what it would take for me to run courses in the USA, give advice on lighting fire dogs from the previous night’s fire, and reflect on how today’s students compare with those of 15–20 years ago.

As always, thanks for the great questions and your continued support of this series.

Hi Paul, just a curious thought, was there a particular reason you bought German army cargos? or was it just what the Army surplus store had in stock in your size? I have several pairs of British arm Cargos I really like they cost about £14 per pair, I also have some Fjallravens. I love the Army cargo’s they are such a nice fit.

No specific reason, David. I was a skint student and they were the cheapest pants in the store.
