In this episode of #AskPaulKirtley I answer questions about water purification for self-propelled journeys such as back-packing and bike-packing. I also answer a question about an often misunderstood or ignored area of navigation related to magnetic variation and the necessary compass adjustments.

What Is #AskPaulKirtley?
#AskPaulKirtley is my Q&A video and podcast series that aims to answer your questions about bushcraft, survival skills and outdoor life.
The idea here is partly to take the strain off my email inbox and get answers out to people in a more timely fashion.
Rather than send an answer to just that one person, I’d like others to benefit from the answers too. So, just in the same way I’d previously write an email answer, here I’m going to speak the answer (which is much quicker than me typing out an answer, so I’ll get more questions answered as well as benefiting more people).

Hi, Paul,
Thank you for another excelent episode. I admire your extensive knowlegde and appreciate your practical down to earth approach. I do have a question (or two) related to water purification. I understand it’s beyond od scope of what Marco was asking about. The questions: do you have any thoughts about pine xylium filters and their possible application in bushcraft (i refer to the project developed by Massachusetts Institute od Technology). The other question is: do you prefere the pump and gravity filters over the Sawyer mini type ( i don’t know how to call them but believe you get my idea). If you do, why? I apologize for my spelling the telephone makes it difficult to me to check and correct it.
Hi Paul, another great episode – very absorbing and informative, thank you.
Where I wild camp there is a small stream (sadly the only water source for many miles) which is permanently contaminated with iron-oxidising bacteria and is the colour of irn-bru! I always take drinking water with me but would love to know if this stream is or can be made potable. I have only found a few articles concerning the topic and they seem conflicting as to whether or not it is safe to drink. Any ideas? Thanks.
Happy birthday Paul!
Hello Sir,
can a hot tent such as a Snowtrekker or other types of outfitter tents be placed on a sloped terrain (about 20 degree side of a hill) or a must it be on a fairly flat/level surface pad?
In looking at images on the internet, they all seem to be placed on flat piece of land but I wanted to ask your opinion if one has no option but a sloped/hilly camp site. I’ve set up freestanding unheated nylon tents on slopes but never a hot tent.
thanks for a advice.
