PK Podcast 026: Kevin Callan On The Joys Of Winter Camping
Kevin Callan is well known as a paddler and author of many canoe-route guidebooks for his native province of Ontario, Canada. He’s also known as the Happy Camper, and he certainly has always been happy when I’ve camped or chatted with him. Kevin has been a guest on my podcast before and today I’m delighted to welcome him back again to talk about another shared passion of ours – winter camping. Our conversation forms Episode 26 of the Paul Kirtley Podcast…

This is not the first time this has happened. When you release a new blog you always indicate that there’s a button or table too push but many times it’s not there! As today. I’m been trying now for over a half hour too find a way to listen too it unsuccessfully. WHERES THE BUTTON? Frustrated in New Jersey, USA
Hi Ralph, I’m sorry to read you are frustrated. Can you see the green player in the middle of the blog post as per my screenshot below?:
If you can, the play button is the arrow on the right hand end of the green bar.
If not, there is an issue with the webiste I need to know about.
Either way, please let me know if you can see the green bar in this post as per the image above.
Warm regards,
Paul
Loved this podcast. Probably my favourite one yet, I love Kevin’s laid back and flippant approach but it is also apparent he is a very serious and capable outdoors man who understands people. So much more to glean from this than winter camping – brilliant, thanks very much it made my day.
Hey Mick, good to hear from you. I’m happy to read your comments and particularly glad you liked this one so much. I seem to remember you enjoying Kevin’s talk about looking after people/issues on trips at the Canoe Symposium in 2016. As you say, Kevin has a very good mix of attributes.
Warm regards,
Paul
Very fun podcast Paul. Kevin does have a broad base of experience which we need to pay attention to, despite the title of “Happy Camper”. His jovial approach to life is more serious than some realize.
By the way, I have it on good authority that Santa will be dropping off a copy of Kevin’s new book under my tree this Christmas. I look forward to reading it.
Thank for the podcast,
Cheers,
Marcel
You both talked all around the subject of making coffee, established that is was a good method but failed to share any details AT ALL!!! Disappointing !
But Jerold, it’s all here on this site already…
First two minutes of this video from a trip Kevin and I did here:
Canoeing The Spey With Kevin, Ray & Justine part 9 – Teaching Kevin To Make Campfire Coffee
And it’s in the middle of this video too: Canoeing The Spey With Kevin, Ray & Justine part 2 – A Few Campfire Tricks
And we’re regularly doing this technique in random places on Instagram and Snapchat…
Hope this helps fill in the gaps.
Warm regards,
Paul
Great Podcast. I ended up buying The Winter Camping Guide and 2 other of Kevin’s books after listening.
Hi Marty, thanks for your feedback. I’m happy you enjoyed listening to this one. Enjoy the books 🙂
Warm regards,
Paul
Been listening and following for quite some time but tend to keep comments to myself most of the time. I enjoy the podcasts and Friday nights are often spent with you on Youtube here in Vancouver.
Where can I find the transcript for this podcast please.
Hi Peter, for a number of reasons it was not transcribed at the time. Today I have commissioned a transcription service to transcribe it for me and I hope to be able to post it within a week of this reply.
Warm regards,
Paul
